Psalms 27
The Lord is My Salvation
1The LORD is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers assail me
to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.
3 Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet I will be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of the LORD,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
and to inquire in his temple.
5 For he will hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will lift me high upon a rock.
6 And now my head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the LORD.
7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud;
be gracious to me and answer me! 8 You have said, “Seek my face.”
My heart says to you,
“Your face, LORD, do I seek.”
9 Hide not your face from me.
Turn not your servant away in anger,
O you who have been my help.
Cast me not off; forsake me not,
O God of my salvation! 10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me,
but the LORD will take me in.
11 Teach me your way, O LORD,
and lead me on a level path
because of my enemies. 12 Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they breathe out violence.
13 I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD
in the land of the living! 14 Wait for the LORD;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the LORD!

David's Song of Deliverance
1 And David spoke to the LORD the words of this song on the day when the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul. 2 He said,“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, 3 my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation,
my stronghold and my refuge,
my savior; you save me from violence. 4 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.
5 “For the waves of death encompassed me,
the torrents of destruction assailed me; 6 the cords of Sheol entangled me;
the snares of death confronted me.
7 “In my distress I called upon the LORD;
to my God I called.
From his temple he heard my voice,
and my cry came to his ears.
8 “Then the earth reeled and rocked;
the foundations of the heavens trembled
and quaked, because he was angry. 9 Smoke went up from his nostrils,
and devouring fire from his mouth;
glowing coals flamed forth from him. 10 He bowed the heavens and came down;
thick darkness was under his feet. 11 He rode on a cherub and flew;
he was seen on the wings of the wind. 12 He made darkness around him his canopy,
thick clouds, a gathering of water. 13 Out of the brightness before him
coals of fire flamed forth. 14 The LORD thundered from heaven,
and the Most High uttered his voice. 15 And he sent out arrows and scattered them;
lightning, and routed them. 16 Then the channels of the sea were seen;
the foundations of the world were laid bare,
at the rebuke of the LORD,
at the blast of the breath of his nostrils.
17 “He sent from on high, he took me;
he drew me out of many waters. 18 He rescued me from my strong enemy,
from those who hated me,
for they were too mighty for me. 19 They confronted me in the day of my calamity,
but the LORD was my support. 20 He brought me out into a broad place;
he rescued me, because he delighted in me.
21 “The LORD dealt with me according to my righteousness;
according to the cleanness of my hands he rewarded me. 22 For I have kept the ways of the LORD
and have not wickedly departed from my God. 23 For all his rules were before me,
and from his statutes I did not turn aside. 24 I was blameless before him,
and I kept myself from guilt. 25 And the LORD has rewarded me according to my righteousness,
according to my cleanness in his sight.
26 “With the merciful you show yourself merciful;
with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; 27 with the purified you deal purely,
and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. 28 You save a humble people,
but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them down. 29 For you are my lamp, O LORD,
and my God lightens my darkness. 30 For by you I can run against a troop,
and by my God I can leap over a wall. 31 This God—his way is perfect;
the word of the LORD proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
32 “For who is God, but the LORD?
And who is a rock, except our God? 33 This God is my strong refuge
and has made my way blameless. 34 He made my feet like the feet of a deer
and set me secure on the heights. 35 He trains my hands for war,
so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 36 You have given me the shield of your salvation,
and your gentleness made me great. 37 You gave a wide place for my steps under me,
and my feet did not slip; 38 I pursued my enemies and destroyed them,
and did not turn back until they were consumed. 39 I consumed them; I thrust them through, so that they did not rise;
they fell under my feet. 40 For you equipped me with strength for the battle;
you made those who rise against me sink under me. 41 You made my enemies turn their backs to me,
those who hated me, and I destroyed them. 42 They looked, but there was none to save;
they cried to the LORD, but he did not answer them. 43 I beat them fine as the dust of the earth;
I crushed them and stamped them down like the mire of the streets.
44 “You delivered me from strife with my people;
you kept me as the head of the nations;
people whom I had not known served me. 45 Foreigners came cringing to me;
as soon as they heard of me, they obeyed me. 46 Foreigners lost heart
and came trembling out of their fortresses.
47 “The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock,
and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation, 48 the God who gave me vengeance
and brought down peoples under me, 49 who brought me out from my enemies;
you exalted me above those who rose against me;
you delivered me from men of violence.
50 “For this I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations,
and sing praises to your name. 51 Great salvation he brings to his king,
and shows steadfast love to his anointed,
to David and his offspring forever.”
Psalms 91
My Refuge and My Fortress
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust.”
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler
and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his pinions,
and under his wings you will find refuge;
his faithfulness is a shield and buckler. 5 You will not fear the terror of the night,
nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side,
ten thousand at your right hand,
but it will not come near you. 8 You will only look with your eyes
and see the recompense of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the LORD your dwelling place—
the Most High, who is my refuge— 10 no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
no plague come near your tent.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways. 12 On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone. 13 You will tread on the lion and the adder;
the young lion and the serpent you will trample underfoot.
14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him;
I will protect him, because he knows my name. 15 When he calls to me, I will answer him;
I will be with him in trouble;
I will rescue him and honor him. 16 With long life I will satisfy him
and show him my salvation.”
Luke 9
The Transfiguration
28 Now about eight days after these sayings he took with him Peter and John and James and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white. 30 And behold, two men were talking with him, Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in glory and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they became fully awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him. 33 And as the men were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here. Let us make three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah”—not knowing what he said. 34 As he was saying these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!” 36 And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and told no one in those days anything of what they had seen.The Boy with an Evil Spirit
37 On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him. 38 And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him. 40 And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” 41 Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.The Second Prediction of the Passion
43 And all were astonished at the majesty of God.But while they were all marveling at everything he was doing, Jesus said to his disciples, 44 “Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, so that they might not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
The Greatest in the Kingdom
46 An argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing the reasoning of their hearts, took a child and put him by his side 48 and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.” 49 John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you.”The Samaritans Reject Jesus
51 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. 52 And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. 53 But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 54 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But he turned and rebuked them. 56 And they went on to another village.The Cost of Discipleship
57 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 59 To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 60 And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead.
