Psalms 119

73 Yodh

 Your hands have made and fashioned me;
 give me understanding that I may learn your commandments.
74 Those who fear you shall see me and rejoice,
 because I have hoped in your word.
75 I know, O LORD, that your rules are righteous,
 and that in faithfulness you have afflicted me.
76 Let your steadfast love comfort me
 according to your promise to your servant.
77 Let your mercy come to me, that I may live;
 for your law is my delight.
78 Let the insolent be put to shame,
 because they have wronged me with falsehood;
 as for me, I will meditate on your precepts.
79 Let those who fear you turn to me,
 that they may know your testimonies.
80 May my heart be blameless in your statutes,
 that I may not be put to shame!
81 Kaph

 My soul longs for your salvation;
 I hope in your word.
82 My eyes long for your promise;
 I ask, “When will you comfort me”?

83 For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke,
 yet I have not forgotten your statutes.
84 How long must your servant endure?
 When will you judge those who persecute me?
85 The insolent have dug pitfalls for me;
 they do not live according to your law.
86 All your commandments are sure;
 they persecute me with falsehood; help me!
87 They have almost made an end of me on earth,
 but I have not forsaken your precepts.
88 In your steadfast love give me life,
 that I may keep the testimonies of your mouth.
89 Lamedh

 Forever, O LORD, your word
 is firmly fixed in the heavens.
90 Your faithfulness endures to all generations;
 you have established the earth, and it stands fast.
91 By your appointment they stand this day,
 for all things are your servants.
92 If your law had not been my delight,
 I would have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget your precepts,
 for by them you have given me life.
94 I am yours; save me,
 for I have sought your precepts.
95 The wicked lie in wait to destroy me,
 but I consider your testimonies.
96 I have seen a limit to all perfection,
 but your commandment is exceedingly broad.
97 Mem

 Oh how I love your law!
 It is my meditation all the day.
98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies,
 for it is ever with me.
99 I have more understanding than all my teachers,
 for your testimonies are my meditation.
100 I understand more than the aged,
 for I keep your precepts.
101 I hold back my feet from every evil way,
 in order to keep your word.
102 I do not turn aside from your rules,
 for you have taught me.
103 How sweet are your words to my taste,
 sweeter than honey to my mouth!
104 Through your precepts I get understanding;
 therefore I hate every false way.

Isaiah 66

Heaven Is My Throne

1 Thus says the LORD:
“Heaven is my throne,
 and the earth is my footstool;
what is the house that you would build for me,
 and what is the place of my rest?
2 All these things my hand has made,
 and so all these things came to be,
 → declares the LORD.
But this is the one to whom I will look:
 he who is humble and contrite in spirit
 and trembles at my word.

3 “He who slaughters an ox is like one who kills a man;
 he who sacrifices a lamb, like one who breaks a dog's neck;
he who presents a grain offering, like one who offers pig's blood;
 he who makes a memorial offering of frankincense, like one who blesses an idol.
These have chosen their own ways,
 and their soul delights in their abominations;
4 I also will choose harsh treatment for them
 and bring their fears upon them,
because when I called, no one answered,
 when I spoke, they did not listen;
but they did what was evil in my eyes
 and chose that in which I did not delight.”

5 Hear the word of the LORD,
 you who tremble at his word:
“Your brothers who hate you
 and cast you out for my name's sake
have said, ‘Let the LORD be glorified,
 that we may see your joy’;
 but it is they who shall be put to shame.

6 “The sound of an uproar from the city!
 A sound from the temple!
The sound of the LORD,
 rendering recompense to his enemies!
Rejoice with Jerusalem

7 “Before she was in labor
 she gave birth;
before her pain came upon her
 she delivered a son.
8 Who has heard such a thing?
 Who has seen such things?
Shall a land be born in one day?
 Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment?
For as soon as Zion was in labor
 she brought forth her children.
9 Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause to bring forth”?

 says the LORD;
“shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb”?

 says your God.

10 “Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
 all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
 all you who mourn over her;
11 that you may nurse and be satisfied
 from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
 from her glorious abundance.”

12 For thus says the LORD:
“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
 and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
 and bounced upon her knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts,
 so I will comfort you;
 you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
 your bones shall flourish like the grass;
and the hand of the LORD shall be known to his servants,
 and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.
Final Judgments against the Wicked

15 “For behold, the LORD will come in fire,
 and his chariots like the whirlwind,
to render his anger in fury,
 and his rebuke with flames of fire.
16 For by fire will the LORD enter into judgment,
 and by his sword, with all flesh;
 and those slain by the LORD shall be many.
17 “Those who sanctify and purify themselves to go into the gardens, following one in the midst, eating pig's flesh and the abomination and mice, shall come to an end together, declares the LORD.
18 “For I know their works and their thoughts, and the time is coming to gather all nations and tongues. And they shall come and shall see my glory,
19 and I will set a sign among them. And from them I will send survivors to the nations, to Tarshish, Pul, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the coastlands far away, that have not heard my fame or seen my glory. And they shall declare my glory among the nations. 20 And they shall bring all your brothers from all the nations as an offering to the LORD, on horses and in chariots and in litters and on mules and on dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the LORD, just as the Israelites bring their grain offering in a clean vessel to the house of the LORD.
21 And some of them also I will take for priests and for Levites, says the LORD.

22 “For as the new heavens and the new earth
 that I make
shall remain before me, says the LORD,
 so shall your offspring and your name remain.
23 From new moon to new moon,
 and from Sabbath to Sabbath,
all flesh shall come to worship before me,
declares the LORD.
24 “And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Nehemiah 13

Foreigners Excluded
1 On that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people. And in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever enter the assembly of God,
2 for they did not meet the people of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them—yet our God turned the curse into a blessing. 3 As soon as the people heard the law, they separated from Israel all those of foreign descent.
The Temple Cleansed
4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, who was appointed over the chambers of the house of our God, and who was related to Tobiah,
5 prepared for Tobiah a large chamber where they had previously put the grain offering, the frankincense, the vessels, and the tithes of grain, wine, and oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, singers, and gatekeepers, and the contributions for the priests. 6 While this was taking place, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went to the king. And after some time I asked leave of the king 7 and came to Jerusalem, and I then discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, preparing for him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. 8 And I was very angry, and I threw all the household furniture of Tobiah out of the chamber. 9 Then I gave orders, and they cleansed the chambers, and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense.
Tithes Restored
10 I also found out that the portions of the Levites had not been given to them, so that the Levites and the singers, who did the work, had fled each to his field.
11 So I confronted the officials and said, “Why is the house of God forsaken?” And I gathered them together and set them in their stations. 12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain, wine, and oil into the storehouses. 13 And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouses Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and Pedaiah of the Levites, and as their assistant Hanan the son of Zaccur, son of Mattaniah, for they were considered reliable, and their duty was to distribute to their brothers. 14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God and for his service.
The Sabbath Restored
15 In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day when they sold food.
16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”
19 As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day.
20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.
Intermarriage Forbidden
23 In those days also I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab.
24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and they could not speak the language of Judah, but only the language of each people. 25 And I confronted them and cursed them and beat some of them and pulled out their hair. And I made them take an oath in the name of God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters to their sons, or take their daughters for your sons or for yourselves. 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin on account of such women? Among the many nations there was no king like him, and he was beloved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless, foreign women made even him to sin. 27 Shall we then listen to you and do all this great evil and act treacherously against our God by marrying foreign women?”
28 And one of the sons of Jehoiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was the son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite. Therefore I chased him from me.
29 Remember them, O my God, because they have desecrated the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.
30 Thus I cleansed them from everything foreign, and I established the duties of the priests and Levites, each in his work;
31 and I provided for the wood offering at appointed times, and for the firstfruits.
Remember me, O my God, for good.

Hebrews 8

Christ’s Eternal Priesthood
1 Now the point in what we are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,
2 a minister in the holy places, in the true tent that the Lord set up, not man. 3 For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; thus it is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer. 4 Now if he were on earth, he would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts according to the law. 5 They serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things. For when Moses was about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, “See that you make everything according to the pattern that was shown you on the mountain.”
The New Covenant
6 But as it is, Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant he mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises.
7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.
8 For he finds fault with them when he says:

 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord,
 when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel
 and with the house of Judah,
9 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers
 on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.
For they did not continue in my covenant,
 and so I showed no concern for them, declares the Lord.
10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
 after those days, declares the Lord:
I will put my laws into their minds,
 and write them on their hearts,
and I will be their God,
 and they shall be my people.
11 And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor
 and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’
for they shall all know me,
 from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities,
 and I will remember their sins no more.”

13 In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.
